Ο Rudi Protrudi, «αιώνιος teenager» έρχεται για ακόμα τρεις συναυλίες το Μάρτιο του 2024 στην Ελλάδα που θα εξελιχθούν σε ροκ εν ρολ πάρτι για να δηλώσει πως το γκαράζ δεν θα πεθάνει ποτέ και να δημιουργήσει την ατμόσφαιρα του νεοϋορκέζικου underground. 1ος σταθμός τα Ιωάννινα στις 16 Μαρτίου 2024.
Οι Fuzztones δημιουργήθηκαν το 1980 με βασικά μέλη τον κιθαρίστα Rudi Protrudi και την οργανίστρια Deb O’ Nair, που προηγουμένως συμμετείχαν στους Tina Peel, ένα bubblegum punk γκρουπ που σόκαρε με τη σεξουαλική θεματολογία των τραγουδιών του.
Το όνομα του συγκροτήματος προήλθε από το Fuzzbox, ένα εφφέ για κιθάρα που κυκλοφόρησε τη δεκαετία του ’60 και χρησιμοποιήθηκε από σχεδόν όλα τα συγκροτήματα της πρώτης έκρηξης του γκαράζ στα 1965-67.
Μαζί με τους Elan Portnoy, Michael Jay και Ira Elliot ηχογράφησαν δυο ιστορικά albums, τα Leave your mind at home και το Lysergic emanations, με το δεύτερο να φτάνει στο νούμερο δύο των αμερικάνικων Charts. Στο ενεργητικό τους επίσης εκείνη την εποχή είχαν και ένα album μαζί με τον Screanun Jay Hawikns.
Αθάνατη νεοϋορκέζικη αλητεία και βρώμικο cult
Ο Rudi Protrudi γεννήθηκε στην Ουάσινγκτον και μεγάλωσε στο Camp Hill της Πενσυλβάνια, αλλά από τους κακόφημους δρόμους της ανατολικής πλευράς της Νέας Υόρκης, βρέθηκε στο Sunset Strip του Χόλιγουντ, κι από εκεί στο Βερολίνο όπου ζει μέχρι σήμερα.
Για την τελευταία τους εμφάνιση στην Αθήνα -στο Gagarin- o μουσικός τύπος μίλησε για «το απόλυτο garage punk όργιο, rock n’ Roll ύμνοι, δολοφονικά riffs, εθιστικά refrains, ένταση, ενέργεια και δυναμισμός -όλα σε υπερβολικές δόσεις. Ένα εκρηκτικό μείγμα αθάνατης νεοϋορκέζικης αλητείας και βρώμικου cult”
‘Παίζω επαγγελματικά από το ’66, οπότε έχουν περάσει 56 χρόνια τώρα! Γαμώτο! Είμαι πραγματικά τόσο μεγάλος; Ακόμα νιώθω σαν έφηβος! Είμαι ο γηραιότερος έφηβος στον κόσμο» έχει πει στο Mic ο Ρούντι.
Ο Ρούντι, ο S.J. Hawkins και ο Νίκος Τριανταφυλλίδης
Λίγο πριν εκείνη τη συναυλία στο Gagarin o Ρούντι μίλησε στον Γιάννη Περδίκη για το De Pop για την δεκαετία του 80 όταν έκανε ένα live δίσκο με τον θρυλικό Screaming Jay Hawkins και τον Νίκο Τριανταφυλλίδη που ίδρυσε το Gagarin 205 έχει επίσης κάνει μια ταινία με την ζωή του S.J. Hawkins (“I put a spell on me”). ‘
«Αρχικά δεν ήξερα τον Νικόλα. Με προσέγγισε όταν δούλευε πάνω σε αυτή την τανία καθώς ο S.J. Hawkins του είχε μιλήσει για εμένα, και συγκεκριμένα για το γεγονός ότι τον βοήθησα να ανανεώσει την καριέρα του σε ένα σημείο που βρισκόταν πολύ χαμηλά. Προφανώς θα του είχε πει ότι διέθετα και βιντεοσκοπήσεις από εκείνες τις συναυλίες που δώσαμε μαζί.
Οπότε ο Νικόλας ήρθε στην Καλιφόρνια για να μου πάρει συνέντευξη για το φιλμ. Με ακολούθησε μια τυπική καθημερινή μέρα, παίρνοντάς μου συνέντευξη καθώς πήγαινα σε ένα μαγαζί με αλκοόλ, καθώς οδηγούσα πίνοντας το ουίσκι κόλα μου…δυστυχώς το Mercury Cougar του ’67 που είχα τότε ήταν στο συνεργείο οπότε οδηγούσα κάποιο μοντέρνο αμάξι που μου είχε δανείσει η πεθερά μου.
Τέλος πάντων, εκτός από την συνέντευξη κατέληξα να δώσω και ζωντανό υλικό από συναυλίες του Jay, μαζί μας αλλά και δικές του, καθώς και μια σπάνια τηλεοπτική εμφάνισή του από τις αρχές των ‘60s. Αργότερα ο Νικόλας μου είπε ότι η ταινία προβλήθηκε στις Κάννες και έτυχε καλής αποδοχής. Κάποιοι μεγάλοι παραγωγοί, ήθελαν να αναλάβουν να διανείμουν την ταινία, αλλά ήθελαν να με αντικαταστήσουν με ένα μεγαλύτερο όνομα που θα έλεγε ό,τι ακριβώς έλεγα εγώ! Προς τιμήν του ο Νικόλας δεν το προχώρησε. Πιστεύω ότι η ταινία που γυρίσαμε ήταν αξιοπρεπέστατη και τιμά τον S.J. Hawkins. Είμαι πολύ περήφανος που συμμετέχω στον ίδιο φιλμ με τον Bo Diddley!».
Έτσι, κάναμε ένα άλμπουμ με διασκευές, δίνοντας την εκδοχή των Fuzztones σε υλικό των Patti Smith, Richard Hell, NY Dolls, κλπ. Διασκευάσαμε ακόμα και το «New York, New York» του Frank Sinatra. Είχα ένα πρωτότυπο τραγούδι που στην πραγματικότητα είχα γράψει για τον Νικόλα Τριανταφυλλίδη που ονομάζεται «Barking Up The Wrong Tree» – το οποίο, παρεμπιπτόντως, ο Little Steven (του ραδιοφωνικού προγράμματος Little Steven’S Underground Garage) μόλις επέλεξε ως το «Coolest Song In The World This Week» – καθώς και μερικές άγνωστες διασκευές: «Marble Hall» από τους Marble Hall, «Eyes in the Back of My Head» από τον Bevis Frond, «Land of Nod» από τους Sunliners…
Πήγα σε ένα στούντιο με τον ντράμερ μου και ηχογράφησα τα ρυθμικά κομμάτια και μετά η Lana και εγώ προσθέσαμε overdubs. Το «Land of Nod» είχε ήδη ηχογραφηθεί για το σόλο άλμπουμ της Lana, «Order To Love», αλλά δεν κυκλοφόρησε ποτέ. Είχα παίξει μπάσο σε αυτό και ο πρώην Fuzztone Lenny Svilar έπαιξε lead. Εγώ απλώς έκανα overdub τα φωνητικά και έφερα τον Steve Mackay για να ηχογραφήσει το σαξόφωνο. Ήταν πολύ συναρπαστικό να ηχογραφώ με τον σαξοφωνίστα που παρείχε όλο αυτό το υπέροχο σαξόφωνο στο άλμπουμ «Funhouse» των Stooges. Όπως αποδείχθηκε, ο Steve ήταν αρκετά άρρωστος και πέθανε λίγο μετά την ηχογράφηση.

O Γιώργος Γάκης με το συγκρότημα του TROUBLEMAKERS
είναι από τις εμβληματικές παρουσίες στο χώρο της ροκ μουσικής για δεκαετίες τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και στο εξωτερικό με 6 δίσκους στο ενεργητικό τους και συνεργασίες με «ιερά τέρατα» της παγκόσμιας ροκ σκηνής όπως οι SCORPIONS, DEEP PURPLE, WHITESNAKE, RAINBOW, JOE LYNN TURNER, KIP WINGER και πολλοί άλλοι!!

Rudi Protrudi, the “eternal teenager,” is coming for a concert that will turn into a rock ‘n’ roll party to declare that garage will never die and to create the atmosphere of New York underground at Ioannina.
The Fuzztones were formed in 1980 with core members guitarist Rudi Protrudi and organist Deb O’Nair, who previously played in the band Tina Peel, a bubblegum punk group known for its provocative song lyrics.
The name of the band comes from the Fuzzbox, a guitar effect that was popular in the 1960s and used by almost all garage bands during the first garage rock wave in 1965-67.
Together with Elan Portnoy, Michael Jay, and Ira Elliot, they recorded two historic albums, “Leave Your Mind at Home” and “Lysergic Emanations,” with the latter reaching number two on the American Charts. During that time, they also released an album with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.
The band disbanded around 1986, only to reform two years later as a personal project of Protrudi, based on the West Coast and touring in Europe.
After two releases, the group disbanded again, remaining inactive for most of the 1990s, until they reunited in the early 21st century, with Deb O’Nair back on the organ and Jordan Tarlow, from the band’s second lineup, on guitar.
Immortal New York rebellion and dirty cult
Rudi Protrudi was born in Washington and grew up in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, but from the notorious streets of the East Side of New York, he found himself on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and from there to Berlin, where he still lives today.
For their last appearance in Athens – at Gagarin – the music press described it as “the ultimate garage punk orgy, rock ‘n’ roll anthems, killer riffs, addictive refrains, intensity, energy, and power – all in excessive doses. An explosive mix of immortal New York rebellion and dirty cult.”
“I’ve been playing professionally since ‘66, so it’s been 56 years now! Damn! Am I really that old? I still feel like a teenager! I’m the oldest teenager in the world,” Rudi said in an interview.
“When I was a teenager, bands like the Bugs and the Mothers of Invention influenced me a lot because of their aggressive attitude and the counterculture they promoted. I hated school, the cops, the military draft, and authority in general.”
“Times have changed dramatically in recent years. With the absurd political agendas that dictate our lives, I feel we have very little time. In fact, I believe we need to start living each day as if it’s our last. Who knows? It might be.”

Shortly before that concert at Gagarin, Rudi talked to Giannis Perdikis about the ’80s when he recorded a live album with the legendary Screaming Jay Hawkins and Nikos Triantafyllidis, who founded Gagarin 205 and also made a film about S.J. Hawkins called “I Put a Spell on Me.”
“Initially, I didn’t know Nikolas. He approached me when he was working on this film because S.J. Hawkins had spoken to him about me, specifically about how I had helped him revive his career when he was at a low point. Obviously, he had told him that I had video recordings of those concerts we did together.
So Nikolas came to California to interview me for the film. He followed me around on a typical day, interviewing me as I went to a bar, driving while I was drinking my whiskey and cola… unfortunately, my ’67 Mercury Cougar was in the shop at the time, so I was driving some modern car that my mother-in-law had lent me.
Anyway, apart from the interview, I ended up providing live material from Jay’s concerts, both with us and his solo performances, as well as a rare television appearance from the early ‘60s. Later, Nikolas told me that the film was screened at Cannes and was well received. Some big producers wanted to distribute the film but wanted to replace me with a bigger name who would say exactly what I was saying! To his credit, Nikolas didn’t go along with it. I believe the film we made was quite respectable and honors S.J. Hawkins. I’m very proud to be in the same film as Bo Diddley!”
“So, we made an album of covers, giving the Fuzztones’ interpretation to songs by Patti Smith, Richard Hell, NY Dolls, and more. We even covered Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York, New York.’ I had an original song that I had actually written for Nikolas Triantafyllidis called ‘Barking Up The Wrong Tree,’ which, incidentally, Little Steven (of the radio show Little Steven’s Underground Garage) just chose as the ‘Coolest Song In The World This Week.’ We also did some obscure covers: ‘Marble Hall’ by Marble Hall, ‘Eyes in the Back of My Head’ by Bevis Frond, ‘Land of Nod’ by Sunliners…
I went to a studio with my drummer and recorded the rhythm tracks, and then Lana and I added overdubs. ‘Land of Nod’ had already been recorded for Lana’s solo album, ‘Order To Love,’ but it was never released. I had played bass on it, and the former Fuzztone Lenny Svilar played lead. I simply overdubbed the vocals and brought in Steve Mackay to record the saxophone. It was very exciting to record with the saxophonist who provided that wonderful sax on the Stooges’ ‘Funhouse’ album. As it turned out, Steve was quite ill and passed away shortly after the recording.”

George Gakis has been a longstanding figure in the Greek rock music scene.
He created “The Troublemakers'' as a five-piece (melodic) rock group, influenced by groups such as, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, Winger, Scorpions etc
Through his own label “G. G. Records”, he released three albums: ''Keep on Rock 'n' Rollin'', “Pain in my ass'', “Forbidden Paradise'', music and lyrics by George Gakis.
Worth noting is that George Gakis and his band have appeared in literally thousands of live performances, almost everywhere in Greece, England , Thailand, Denmark, Russia , Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic and most of the Balkan countries building up an avid audience of fans.
With the municipality of his home town Ioannina (Greece) he has been in charge of the “Castle Rock Festival”, hosting major artists such as: Scorpions, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Glenn Hughes, Winger, Dokken and British pop band James, among others.
George Gakis and his band The Troublemakers have cooperated several times with Symphonic Orchestras with great success!
Worth mentioning are the band's support performances of legendary rock group concerts, such as Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Scorpions, Glenn Hughes, Dokken, Winger, Over the Rainbow, Joe Lynn Turner, Twisted Sister and Uli Jon Roth.
George Gakis previous album, titled: “Too much ain't never enough” which includes ten (10) original songs, lyrics and music by George Gakis, and one very special arrangement of a traditional Greek song. The album is coproduced and mixed by Kip Winger, with guest star appearances by Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple), Bobby Rondinelli (Rainbow), James Kottak (Scorpions), Greg Smith (Alice Cooper, Over the Rainbow), Mark Cross (Helloween, Firewind, Outloud) and Yiannis Spathas (guitarist of legendary Greek rock group Socrates).
At the present he just finished working on his new album “Parallel dimensions” a very promising new work that concludes 12 original tracks guided by Kip Winger
mixed and mastered in the United States
He is very active in Live shows and he s hoping to see you in one of them ….
